By the weekend planning, bookings and obtaining the required permits from the MPB, 5 vehicles (one Series 1, three Series 2A SWB and a 2A LWB) were completed, and the excited owners/family members were ready for the challenge. At one point, 11 vehicles were booked but due to circumstances some had to withdraw.
Some of us drove our vehicle to the venue from Johannesburg and Pretoria. The biggest surprise was Ian and Amanda Simpson arriving at Seekoeigat in their 1952 Series 1 with a light weight caravan in tow! Seekoeigat’s Bush Camp isn’t really a bush camp since its ablutions is of the highest standard with electricity available.
We all spent Friday evening in front of the Kalahari TV and although on the banks of the Olifants River it wasn’t unpleasantly cold, which was one of the reasons why we have chosen to do this in the winter. The Loskop area is known for its very hot summers and mild winters. The Kleinhans family arrived early on Saturday morning and we left the campsite on time. After a quick stop at the Damwal Motors to refuel, we entered the reserve and within a couple of minutes all formalities were taken care of. The veld has really recovered well since our last visit and the dam itself is 100% full. Driving in convoy, the chances of the ones further back are very slim to see much game. However all of us saw the three rhinos, two adults with a calf.
Unlike last year, we were treated to one river crossing and the trees were covered in leaves. We all arrived at midday at Kanongat without any incidents and walked the short distance to have a look. We spent about two hours in the shade having lunch after which we left on our last leg to the campsite again.
All of us made it to the top gate without missing a beat - well Kevin did made some quick gear changes to compensate for the dislodged spring on the distributor's base.
We arrived back at the campsite around 16:00 with enough time for a quick shower, a walk-about and sundowners before we all braaied together on the river bank. The day ended with a very satisfied feeling, relaxing around the Kalahari TV until you have to go to bed.
Sunday morning we slowly started to pack and leave for home with the last ones leaving just after 11 o'clock. You need an early start with the country roads a bit narrower and to beat the long weekend traffic. We all arrived home and the only "break downs" experienced on the weekend were the distributor's spring working itself loose on Kevin's S2A and Deon's beau fully restored S2A (ex Daryll), with a blocked fuel filter on their way back home.
All who a ended are in agreement that the LROC should add an annual Old Landy event to its calendar and arrange an away weekend for Series vehicles.
Allow me to thank Bruce Richards from Edenvale Minuteman Press Edenvale for the printing of stickers to commemorate the event and lastly all of those whom have join us to make it a very enjoyable weekend.
Watch this space - until we meet once again under the big tree.
