Saturday was busy with both the driver training and 4x4 route drive starting just after 09:00 and the Night Trial registration and briefing at 17:00. The trial was set up during the day with the help of the Blikkies and the Stroebels. Thanks for your assistance.
Etienne Roux gave a short presentation and demonstrated their night vision equipment. He further took some footage during the trial that will be posted on the LROC Website.
We did manage to complete the briefing and walkthrough of the trial before dark(sunset). The trial started as soon as it was dark, and by dark I mean last quarter of the moon! Everyone completed the trial successfully without "serious damage". The only incidents was one vehicle slipping into a hole and then bypassing that section due to potential damage and a flat tyre later in the course. Thanks to the marshals for handling those situations in a controlled manner and for volunteering for this thankless job during trials.
Feedback received was that the participants enjoyed the event, but that driving it in the dark is a different experience, especially for the new members. Points to remember in future night drives is for marshals and co-drivers not to shine torches in the drivers eyes as this seriously affects night vision and for spectators to move out of the way in any recovery situation.
The club also wishes to thank Alex and Betsie from Moegatle for the friendly manner in which we were received and the
discounted rates offered to the LROC. A special thanks for the two prizes they sponsored for this event, as well as for the use of their facilities for the prize-giving ceremony.
The trophies were sponsored by the Lowe family, thanks Brendon.
