Since 2016, LROC has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the Friends of Loskop, who have hosted and guided us on several occasions. They have arranged access to areas of the Loskop Reserve that are not normally open to the public, including Kanongat, a large pool in the Olifants River just before it enters Loskop Dam.
We also have a long-standing relationship with the Loskop Research Centre. Members may remember the Club’s previous support for their work, including donations towards feed for buffalo in quarantine. Delicia Dunn, who is involved in the rehabilitation of Southern Ground Hornbills and Black-footed Cats, will share information about their work and take us around to see the birds and animals in their care.
We will leave the campsite at 07:30 and arrive at the Loskop Reserve at approximately 08:00 to meet our hosts. After the visit, we will drive to Kanongat, crossing several rivers along the way, so please bring your recovery gear. We will stop for lunch at Kanongat.
Permits from Mpumalanga Parks Board (MPB) are required. When booking, please provide the LROC Administrator with:
This information must be submitted to the Friends of Loskop in advance, along with the required payments, to ensure that permits are arranged and we can enter the park without unnecessary delays on Saturday morning.
We expect to return to Seekoeigat at around 16:30. The Kalahari TV will be available afterwards for those wanting to relax and socialise with fellow members – please bring a bag of wood to keep it going.
Sunday is free for everyone to enjoy at their leisure.
Please remember that the campsite is on the river bank, so take appropriate precautions against mosquitoes.
Fees: Campsite fees will be collected at the campsite, cash only please. Conservation levies and fees for the Loskop Reserve excursion must be paid in advance, into the LROC account.
Finally, a GPS warning: the campsite is on the western bank of the Olifants River, with another establishment on the opposite bank. Some GPS systems have been known to send visitors to the wrong side of the river, so please check your route carefully!
See you all under the big tree! 🌳
