If you feel like getting off the tar and onto some real 4x4 terrain, then try something you’ve never done before – ride in a dry river bed for 4 days and experience bush camping at it’s very best! Carry everything you will need for 4 days and drive a unique route specifically arranged for the LROC. A trip of this type only happens once in a while and normally when it gets advertised it’s booked out very quickly. So what are you waiting for? Make your booking now!
The group will meet at SANBI Mokopane and the convoy will depart at 07h00 sharp on Saturday 21st of September from where we will then drive to the Oliphants River. We cannot leave late as we have to get to a campsite on the river bank before nightfall - so please don’t be late! The first day is 130 km on tar and 22 km in the river itself.
We will follow the Oliphant’s River for the next 4 days and should emerge around midday on Tuesday 24th September with the closest town being Burgersfort on the R37, from where you will drive back in your own time. The distance from SANBI to where we emerge from the river is 267 km, so ensure that you have enough fuel for about 140km of sand driving.
This will be bush camping with no facilities whatsoever so please ensure you will be properly kitted out for this trip even before you consider booking. It should be noted that the terrain will not allow a person to go back and therefore, once you are committed, you can’t turn back.
The number of vehicles will be limited to 20 excluding that of our guide and therefore you have to book your place with our Club Administrator as soon as possible. A non-refundable deposit will be payable on booking, to cover some of the guide’s fuel expenses.
Compulsory Requirements : VHF radio, strong recovery points, recovery gear and all camping equipment, water and food supplies you may need to be self- sufficient for 4 days in the bush. If you need to find out more about what to take and how to prepare, please contact Attie Smit.
Should you wish to camp the night of 20th September at SANBI, you may contact Mark Howitt to book a campsite on 082 498 1800 or Mhowitt@sanbi.org.za. The costs are R70 per site and R70 per person per night. Ablution facilities are available. Also available at SANBI is a 4 bedroom guest house, sleeping 8, at R170.00 per person per night sharing or R240.00 per person per night single.
See you under a Big Tree in the river.
In the past we’ve had members book for this event and never arrived. Please don't book if you are not absolutely sure that you are going to do this. It is not fair that some have their names on the waiting list and others just don’t show up without any apology or at least with some lame excuse!
Non-refundable guide fee.
