In place of the 60th Jubilee weekend being cancelled, we would still very much like to celebrate the Heritage Weekend at the Old Mill Drift on the Farm Beginsel nearby Fouriesburg in the Free State.

Old Mill Drift is a 665 ha organic guest farm on the Caledon River. Enclosed into the majestic Maluti Mountains by 14 km of Caledon River, an equally magnetic landscape filled with natural springs and pools, waterfalls, three dams and forests in parts.

A horse farm with a herd of wild horses in our mountains, a small Warmblood stud, a band of motley ponies to delight the kids and a herd of endangered Spanish donkeys.

The farm’s water, supplied by three natural springs, naturally filtered by permeating through the sandstone mountains is rich in minerals and trace elements and among the finest you can drink.

Previously harvested here, a variety of organically certified herbs such as licudia surcia, rosehip, pelargonium, helecresium, wild mint and rosemary, which was exported to the near and far markets of the world.

Camping and Caravanning

This is a space of absolute quiet – peace and tranquillity. The remote campsites are large and thus uncrowded. In the evenings listen to the hoot of the owl and experience the vast Milky Way during a new moon. Or when full, the bright backlit silver-blue rolling hills of Lesotho. This is definitely one for the bucket list.

“CAMP WILD:” Area next to the Old Mill, with viewing deck overlooking dam, 6 toilets, 3 showers, communal braai area within the 665 ha Old Mill Drift farm boundary.

Please note:

  1. The LROC will not be the only campers at the venue, but will all camp together

  2. Ice, firewood and charcoal available for purchase onsite

  3. No loud noise permitted

  4. Caravans are permitted if towed by 4×4.

4x4 Trails

There are 4 4x4 trails from the farm:

1. Old Mill Drift Mountain Pass - Level 4.

Extreme terrain, a grade 4 that goes over the mountain to Rebellie and on to R712. Recommend only high clearance vehicles with all terrain tyres at a pressure of 1.1 bar.

Approx 28.6km in length to Rebellie, on to Bokpoort, then left just before Clarens (R711) and back to farm (or back to the farm descending the mountain) the round-trip totalling around 45km.

2. Pilgrims Rest - Level 2

A beautiful easy scenic drive from OLD MILL DRIFT , east across five farms to where the road crosses over the river (the start of the trail to Rebellie and Monansa) to an idyllic picnic spot just before the river crossing  – a truly beautiful spiritual place. One can go on further to do 4 further Caledon River crossings to the back of Pilgrims Rest.

3. Worlds End - Level 3

The road takes you over the mountains to where you can go no further. Drive straight past where you turn left to go up the Old Mill Drift Mountain Pass. In the region of about a 4 – 5 hr drive to the end and back to the farm.

4. Old Mill - Level 5

A short technical trail
