The LROC returns to one of our favourite venues. Only three hours’ drive from Gauteng, near the small town of Volksrust, lies a gem of mother nature that is well worth exploring. It’s a place that has been blessed with abundance. Waterfalls elegantly find their way to the streams below and black eagles soar in the skies above. The farms, Waterval and Schuilhoek, are situated at the end of the great Drakensberg escarpment, called the Versamelberge. It's here, on top of a sheer cliff, where the boundaries of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State come together in a spectacle of nature.

The Rooibektiptol campsite is situated on a plateau against the side of the mountain with spectacular views and is equipped with communal toilets and showers. Lighting is provided but sites are not electrified.

There are 5 spectacular trails available to the LROC members. You can select which trail you wish to do on Saturday 7 August:

  • 3 Provinces Main / Pannetjies Pass
  • Bobjnkrans & Tierkloof
  • Walletjiestreet
  • Tierkloof Extreme

On Sunday 8 August, led by an expert on this subject, the LROC members will drive the Roodedraai Battlefields Trail to several places of historic interest. This trail takes about 6 to 7 hours.

Rooibektiptol Campsite

The large campsite, with 42 individual stands, is situated 2km from the farmyard, at the foot of a sheer cliff, with a breathtaking view over the valley below. A short hiking trail in the ravine next to the campsite will take you through dense bush and past numerous tiny waterfalls and splash pools, up to the sundowner point above the campsite.

The campsite features:

  • 42 stands, with braai facilities. Firewood is available at the farmhouse.
  • Communal ablutions with hot water showers, basins and flush toilets - hot water provided by a fire "donkie".
  • No electricity - Lighting in the campsite and ablutions are provided by a generator during evenings.
  • Ideal for camper trailers and offroad caravans. Unfortunately normal caravans will not be able to reach the campsite.

Mountain Rock and Log Cabins

The Mountain Rock and Log Cabins offer secluded, luxury accommodation in the sweet silence of nature next to a rippling stream, in between the mountains. The cabins are located 2 km from the farmyard and 4 km from the campsite. Each cabin is fully equipped for self-catering stays. A short hiking trail through dense bush and breathtaking scenes, including tiny waterfalls and splash pools, connect the Rock and Log Cabins. Braai facilities are available and wood can be bought at the farmhouse.

PLEASE NOTE: A high ground clearance vehicle is essential to reach the mountain cabins and campsites. It's best to have a 4x4, especially in wet weather.

Payment Note:

  • Payment for camping and trails must be made to the LROC before the cut-off date.
  • Cabins must be booked directly with the venue owner (Landline: 017 735 5286, Cell: 082 785 8002 Cell phone reception is limited, you are welcome to send an SMS or Whatsapp message. Fax: 086 657 6758)
  • Firewood and ice are available for purchase at the farmhouse.
